Ottawa, December 16, 2024 – Following the release of the Fall Economic Statement, Innovative Medicines Canada (IMC) is calling on the federal government to prioritize fiscal responsibility while addressing the urgent healthcare needs of Canadians and improving patient access to life-saving treatments across the country.
“This government has signaled a commitment to advancing pharmacare, but we encourage a more targeted approach that builds on existing systems to address gaps in access to medicines,” said Dr. Bettina Hamelin, President of Innovative Medicines Canada. “By focusing on solutions that directly support those without adequate coverage, we can achieve meaningful progress for patients in a more efficient and sustainable way.”
IMC is also calling on the federal government to work collaboratively with provinces and territories to close access gaps and accelerate the availability of innovative medicines. Today’s announcement from Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the Council of the Federation about reducing the time it takes to publicly list essential cancer drugs is a major step toward ensuring that patients across Canada can access the life-saving treatments they need, when they need them.
IMC and its members stand ready to partner with all levels of government to develop patient-centered policies that improve access, close equity gaps, and strengthen Canada’s healthcare system while ensuring its sustainability for future generations.
