Ottawa, July 23, 2026 – Innovative Medicines Canada (IMC) welcomes today’s call from Canada’s Premiers, issued at the Council of the Federation’s Summer Meeting in Charlottetown, for sustainable federal funding to help provinces and territories continue delivering timely, high-quality healthcare—including access to innovative medicines.
“We thank Canada’s Premiers for uniting to recognize the importance of timely access to medicines, clinical trials, and innovative treatments as essential to modern healthcare,” said Dr. Bettina Hamelin, President and CEO of IMC. “For too long, Canada has ranked last in the G7 for timely access to new medicines. Today’s commitment signals a shared recognition that Canadians deserve better—and that our health systems and the patients who depend on them cannot afford to be left behind.”
The premier’s commitment comes at a critical moment. Around the world, pharmaceutical policy is shifting rapidly in the wake of the U.S. most-favoured nation pricing policy, which is influencing where companies invest, conduct clinical trials, and launch new medicines. Predictable, sustainable federal funding will help provinces and territories plan effectively, strengthen healthcare delivery, and ensure Canadians have timely access to innovative medicines and treatments in this uncertain environment.
