Canada has taken a leadership role internationally for ethical practices in the global pharmaceutical industry.
Innovative Medicines Canada is an association among other associations, worldwide. As part of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFMPA), Innovative Medicines Canada and our industry have been sending a clear signal: we are committed to ethical practices.
Through our concerted efforts to introduce international ethical standards, like APEC’s Mexico City Principles for Voluntary Codes of Business Ethics in the Biopharmaceutical Sector, to pushing for the international Consensus Framework for Ethical Collaboration between patients’ organizations, healthcare professionals and the pharmaceutical industry, we have positioned Canada as a world leader on ethical standards.
Our Code of Ethical Practices encompasses the core concepts used in the widely-adopted Consensus Framework for Ethical Collaboration, developed by five leading world health organizations.
Key tenets from the Consensus Framework include:
The Framework establishes a method for healthcare professionals, patient organizations and the pharmaceutical industry to collaborate and achieve these goals. The International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations, International Council of Nurses, International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, International Pharmaceutical Federation and the World Medical Association developed the code in partnership to provide a framework for health organizations wishing to build their own ethical guidelines.
In Canada, we are working with the Canadian Medical Association, the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the Best Medicines Coalition, which is an organization that represents patient groups, the Canadian Nurses Association and the Health Charities Coalition of Canada to develop the Canadian Consensus Framework for Ethical Collaboration.
We are looking at our existing individual ethical standards, such as Innovative Medicines Canada’s Code of Ethical Practices, and working to develop a common set of principles that lay the foundation for our group to continue to work together in an open and transparent manner.
The global Consensus Framework enabled Innovative Medicines Canada to engage a large group of key stakeholders in discussions related to ethics, to share and gather information and promote organizations’ common approaches to ensuring high quality patient care.
